Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to be an experienced writer to apply?
No. We welcome students of all writing levels. Our editors will provide guidance and feedback to help you develop your voice. What matters most is your curiosity and willingness to engage with different perspectives.
Who can apply?
High school and college students who are currently studying in the United States or China can apply.
What topics can I write about?
You’ll choose from themes like climate change, mental health, technology, education, and more. If you have a different issue you’re passionate about, you can suggest it in your application.
What if I don’t agree with my partner?
That’s the point! You’ll each write your own op-ed first, then work together to build a joint piece. The goal isn’t to erase differences but to find common ground and model respectful dialogue.
How much time will this take?
Each cycle runs 6–8 weeks. Expect to spend 2–3 hours per week writing, revising, and collaborating with your partner. See more information on the Student Applications page.
What if my English or Chinese writing isn’t perfect?
That’s okay. We accept submissions in both English and Chinese, and we will help polish the final piece. The emphasis is on your ideas, not perfect grammar.
Will my writing be published?
Yes. Completed op-eds and joint pieces will be published on the Converging Horizons website, and select features may be highlighted on our social media.
What do I gain from this experience?
Improved writing and cross-cultural communication skills, publication credit for your portfolio or résumé, a unique opportunity to connect with peers across the Pacific, and the chance to contribute to bridging global dialogue.
